Rajiv Kumar Chief Election Commissioner


Former Finance Secretary and current Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar has been appointed as the 25th Chief Election Commissioner (CEC).


He took over from Sushil Chandra on 15 May 2022. He will get tenure till 2025.


In such a situation, the general elections to be held in 2024 will be held under his supervision. Kumar took over as Election Commissioner of the Election Commission of India (ECI) on September 1, 2020.


Kumar was the chairman of the Public Enterprise Selection Board (PESB) before taking charge in the Election Commission. He joined as President of PESB in April 2020.


Kumar, a 1984 batch officer of Indian Administrative Service of Bihar / Jharkhand cadre, retired from IAS in February 2020. Born on February 19, 1960, Kumar holds several academic degrees, including a BSc, LLB, PGDM and a master's degree in public policy.


Kumar has also been the Director of the Central Board of Reserve Bank of India (RBI), SBI, NA BARD.


Economic Intelligence Council (EIC); Council for Economic Stability and Development (FSDC); Bank Board Bureau (BBB); He was a member of several other boards and committees, including the Financial Sector Regulatory Appointments Search Committee (FSRASC), and the Civil Services Board.


Election Commission of India


It is the constitutional authority that governs the central and state election process.


Established - 25 January 1950 (National Voters Day)

Secretariat - New Delhi


Functions - Conducts elections to Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, Vidhan Sabha, President and Vice President.


Provision - Part 14 (Sections 324 to 329)


Article 324 - Duties assigned to the Election Commission in respect of elections are: Monitoring, direction and control.


Article 325 - Voter cannot be disqualified on the basis of religion, caste or gender.


Article 326 - Elections to Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha of each State shall be held on the basis of adult suffrage.


Article 327 - Parliament has the power to make laws regarding legislative elections.


Article 328 - Power of the State Legislature to make laws for their election.


Article 329 -prohibits interference of courts in election related cases.


Commission Structure -


 Originally, there was only one Election Commissioner in the Election Commission, but on October 16, 1989, it was made three members by a notification of the President.


Subsequently, a one-member commission was formed for a short period and on October 1, 1993, the commission was again reduced to three members.


The Chief Electoral Officer is an IAS rank officer.


The Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners are appointed by the President.


Their term is 6 years or up to 65 years (whichever is earlier).


They get the same status as the judges of the Supreme Court of India (SC) and get the same salary and allowances.


The Chief Election Commissioner can be removed by Parliament in the same manner as the Supreme Court judges.
