November 15 - Tribal Pride Day declared

A meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved to declare November 15 as Tribal Pride Day, dedicated to the memory of brave tribal freedom fighters. (Starting from 2021)

November 15 is Birsa Munda's birthday. Tribal communities across the country venerate him as God.

+ Birsa Munda bravely fought against the exploitative system of the British colonial system and led the movement against British oppression by calling for 'Ulgulan' (Revolution).

Birsa Munda:

Birsa Munda was born on 15 November 1875 in the village of Ulihatu in Jharkhand. He died on June 9, 1900. The British had confiscated the agricultural lands of the Munda tribes in the Chhota Nagpur region. To get it back, he started a struggle against the British. He started a revolutionary movement to liberate the tribal society which was in slavery to the British. The liberation movement is called 'Ulgulan' in Mundari language. Birsa was captured on February 3, 1900. He died while in captivity at Ranchi. Birsa is known as the first tribal leader to fight for tribal rights, women's freedom and human dignity. The fight of Lord Birsa Munda was not in vain. The British had to take notice of the exploitation and suffering of the tribals and the 'Chhota Nagpur Tenancy Act-1908' was enacted to protect the interests of the tribals. The law imposed restrictions on the transfer of tribal land to non-tribals from 1908 onwards. They started calling him 'Dharti Aba' in tribal language or 'Bhagwan' in Hindi Birsa Munda had learned how the colonial powers and the 'Diku' (non-tribals who came from outside to exploit the tribals) were endangering their lives. Due to this, their determination to break this abhorrent alliance (British and Indian exploiters of the tribals) became firm and it was fulfilled.
