Ashoka Pillar

Emperor Ashoka gave Lord Buddha's message of peace to the world through Ashoka Pillar. At the top of the Ashoka pillars of Sarnath and Sanchi are four Asiatic lions.

These lions represent strength, courage, confidence and pride. Below him are a horse and bull. In its center is the Dharmachakra. In the eastern part of the chakra is the elephant, in the western part is the bull, in the southern part is the horse and in the northern part is the lion. These are separated by wheels in the middle.

The national symbol is an ancient heritage -

Emperor Ashoka has built Ashoka Pillars in many parts of the country. This historic pillar was adopted as a symbol of independent India.

The Ashoka Pillar housed in the Sarnath Museum in Varanasi was accepted on 26 August 1950.

We see this symbol on everything from Indian currency to passports and government letterheads.

The Ashoka Chakra below the Ashoka Pillar is installed in the center of the Indian flag.

This symbol represents Emperor Ashoka's war prowess and policy of peace in the country.

Emperor Ashoka is considered to be the most powerful emperor of the Mauryan dynasty. He was born in 304 BC. By 232 BCE, their empire extended from the Hindu Kush, Taxila in the north to the Godavari River, Suvarnagiri Hills, Mysore in the south.
