Fifth National Family Health Survey 2022


According to the fifth round report of the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5), the country's overall fertility rate has dropped from 2.2 to 2.0. Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandvia released the latest NFHS-5 information on 5 May 2022 at Vadodara in Gujarat.


Nationally, the total fertility rate (TFR) (average number of children per woman) between NFHS 4 and NFHS-S has decreased from 2.2 to 2.0.


 Five states fertility rates are higher than the national average - 

Bihar - (2.98)

Meghalaya - (2.91)

Uttar Pradesh - (2.35)

Jharkhand - (2.26) 

Manipur - (2.17)


Indian Family Health Survey 2022


The survey covered about 6.37 lakh sample families from 707 districts in 28 states and 8 Union Territories of the country (till March 2017).


Increased use of contraceptives -


According to the report, the country's total contraceptive prevalence rate (CPR) has increased significantly from 54 per cent to 67 per cent.

Incomplete family planning needs have dropped significantly from 13 percent to 9 percent.


Increase in institutional delivery -


According to NHFS-5, the rate of institutional delivery in the country has increased from 79% to 89%.

In rural areas, 87% of deliveries take place in health facilities, compared to 94% in urban areas.


Early marriage -


According to the data, between 2019 and 2021, a total of 25 per cent young women in the age group of 18 to 29 years and 15 per cent young people in the age group of 21 to 29 years got married before reaching the age of 18 and 21 years respectively.

The legal age of marriage is 18 year and 21 years respectively women and men. However, the government is now preparing to make the age of the two equal to 21 years.


In West Bengal, 42% of women get married before reaching the legal age of marriage. The figure is 40 per cent in Bihar, 39 per cent in Tripura, 35 per cent in Jharkhand and 33 per cent in Andhra Pradesh.

 The lowest regions are Lakshadweep (4 per cent), Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh (6 per cent), Himachal Pradesh, Goa and Nagaland (7 per cent each), Kerala and Puducherry (8 per cent).



Slight increase in marriage age -


In 2015-16, the average age of marriage for girls between the ages of 20 and 49 was 19 years. This proportion increased to 19.2 years during the year 2019-21.


The average age of marriage for children between the ages of 25 and 49 increased from 24.5 years to 24.9 years.


The same figure is 25 per cent in Bihar, 24 per cent each in Gujarat, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, 22 per cent in Jharkhand, 21 per cent in Arunachal Pradesh and 20 per cent in West Bengal.


Lakshadweep and Chandigarh (1 per cent each), Kerala (1 per cent), Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and Nagaland (4 per cent each), Karnataka, Andaman and Nicobar (5 per cent each), Himachal Pradesh and Goa (6 per cent). , Delhi, Punjab and Maharashtra (9 % each).
