 Biography of Sharad Pawar



Sharad Pawar is a Marathi, Indian politician. He was the Chief Minister of Maharashtra from 1978 to 1980, 1988 to 1991 and 1993 to 1995.

He is the President of the Nationalist Congress Party, which split from the Indian National Congress in 1999.

Pawar Saheb hails from Baramati in Pune district of Maharashtra. He is the patriarch of a political family that includes his daughter as well as his nephews and other members of the extended family.

In 2017, the government of India, led by his political opponent, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, awarded him the Padma Vibhushan, India's second highest civilian honor.

Early life and family

Pawar was born on December 12, 1940 at Baramati in Pune district. His father's name was Govindrao Pawar. His father was a co-worker in the Khareri Wiki team. Mr. Pawar was educated at Brihanmaharashtra College of Commerce (BMCC), Pune.

He was an ordinary student but was active in politics. He got married to Pratibha Shinde. His daughter's name is Supriya. Sharad Pawar's younger brother, Pratap Pawar, runs the influential Marathi daily "Sakal".



Political career 



When he was in school in 1956, he organized a student rally in support of the "Goa Liberation Satyagraha". This is where his political career began. He also worked as a student union leader while in college.

He invited Maharashtra Chief Minister Yashwantrao Chavan to a function of the students' union. After that, Pawar joined the Youth Congress at the behest of Chavan.



Chavan saw Pawar's dormant leader and after that Pawar became his disciple. After that, during his visit to Pune, Chavan invited Pawar to meet him on purpose and guided him several times.

At the age of 24, he became the President of Maharashtra State Youth Congress. After that he was seen as the political successor of Yashwantrao Chavan.



Assembly


He first won the state assembly elections of 1967 from Baramati constituency. He joined the cabinet of Mr. Vasantrao Naik at the age of 29 as Minister of State.

After the 1978 elections, Vasantdada Patil became the Chief Minister. Along with Yashwantrao Chavan, Vasantdada Patil was also Pawar's guide. But after breaking 12 Congress MLAs, Pawar joined hands with the Opposition and overthrew Vasantdada's government.


Sharad Pawar was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra on July 18, 1978. Along with Pawar, 12 MLAs who left the Congress (Indira) party, the Congress (S) party and the Janata Party formed a front called the Progressive Democratic Party and its leader was Pawar.

He was the youngest Chief Minister of the state. He was then the Chief Minister of Maharashtra from 1988 to 1991 and from 1993 to 1995.



Establishment of the Nationalist Party


On June 10, 1999, Sharad Pawar founded his 'Nationalist Congress Party'. No party or alliance has won a majority since the 1999 Maharashtra Assembly elections.

After that Congress and NCP took the lead and Vilasrao Deshmukh became the new Chief Minister of the state.

Along with politics, cricket is also Pawar's favorite field. On 29 November 2005, he was elected Chairman of the Board of Regulators of Cricket in India.

On July 1, 2010, he assumed the presidency of the International Cricket Council. He is the second Indian to hold the post after Jagmohan Dalmiya.


Awards and Recognitions

Padma Vibhushan - In 2017, Pawar was awarded India's second highest civilian award, the Padma Vibhushan, on the recommendation of the Narendra Modi-led BJP government.
